In Concert - a vivid exploration of 'bookmarked' life experiences

Mark's heading to interstate this week for a concert at the Melbourne Recital Centre on Saturday 18 May 2024.

The University of Melbourne Wind Symphony presents its second concert of the 2024 academic season, entitled Bookmarks, with conductor Steven Williams.

The concert ‘bookmarks’ the range of emotions and imagination of some significant Australian and international composers.

Just as bookmarks help mark pages in a book, they are also important for marking life experiences — especially those we don’t want to forget. The inspiration behind Julie Giroux’s fourth symphony, Bookmarks from Japan, was a gift of six bookmarks featuring famous works by Japanese artists.

Shostakovich’s tone poem October symbolised an ideal new world of freedom and fellowship in Russia.

For Percy Grainger, his Children’s March was bookmarked with the dedication ‘for my playmate beyond the hills,’ a Scandinavian beauty with whom the composer corresponded for eight years but did not marry because of his mother’s jealousy.

Join them for a vivid exploration of bookmarked ‘life experiences’ also featuring and Mark John McEncroe's The Passing and David Stanhope's Folk Songs for Band, Suite Set No.3.
